The internet is a veritable garden of assorted sites – a happy mixture of invention, information and possibility. Everyone will have had a different browsing experience and whilst mainstays such as Google, Youtube and Facebook will be at the forefront of the general users visits, there are some real gems out there that deserve your attention. Here are just 25 of my favourites…

Take This Lollipop

http://www.takethislollipop.com/

This fantastic viral campaign created by Jason Zada, who also created the impossibly popular ‘Elf Yourself’ media, both creates a convincing horror plot and helps to outline the perils of Facebook. There’s something unnerving about seeing your pictures on someone elses computer screen, even though it’s all down to clever technology.

TomHanks-imals

http://tomhanksimals.tumblr.com/

Tom Hanks face implanted onto the bodies of animals. I don’t know why.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Google Doodles

http://www.google.com/doodles/finder/2012/All%20doodles

All of the impressive Google doodles organised into one easy-to-search database – personal favourites are Alan Turing, Moog and of course, Pacman.

Horse Ebooks Twitter

http://twitter.com/#!/Horse_ebooks/

Twitter spam accounts are widespread, simply acting as bots pulling spun content and nonsensical quotes from the web. This is one of my personal favourites.

The Onion – and Facebook reaction site, Literally Unbeliveable

http://www.theonion.com/ + http://www.literallyunbelievable.org/

Satirical news, mocking sensationalist headlines. Check out it’s reaction site to see those on Facebook that were fooled.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The ‘real’ Onion site

http://onionlike.tumblr.com/

And for comparison, above are real news headlines that wouldn’t look out of place on The Onion.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

XKCD

http://www.xkcd.com

Geek humour for all – Randall Munro has become a minor internet celebrity and his odd brand of quirky and intelligent humour has garnered a massive following. Heck, I’ve even used it on a few previous posts here.

27b / 6 – David Thorne

http://www.27bslash6.com/missy.html

David Thorne is perpetual waster of people’s time. Read his correspondences here – but don’t worry, they’re just clever writing (only your time will be wasted).

Sad Stuff On The Street

http://sadstuffonthestreet.com/

Perfect for bringing you down on a sunny day. Though I do often wonder why I keep seeing discarded gloves and shoes in Manchester. Who are these people wandering around in asymmetrical outfits?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Cleverbot

Well, she’s got me there.

 http://cleverbot.com/

Feeling lonely and craving semi-intelligent conversation? Why not chat with this bafflingly ingenious AI – she’s also a bit sassy and sarcastic.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Akinator

http://uk.akinator.com/

This nifty little website acts as the ultimate ’20 Questions’ for the web, and as it learns via input from previous users,  it is consistently updating, adding new answers and answering questions correctly. (I was thinking of ‘Tobias Fünke’ from Arrested Development, and yes, it guessed it).

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I Can Has Cheezburger?

http://icanhascheezburger.com/

The holy grail of what the internet has basically become. Cats. The ‘Lolcat speak’ never appealed to me, but clearly took the web by storm. The site also owns Failblog, KnowYourMeme and The Daily What, so you’re sure to find hours of time-wasting procrastination here.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Animals Talking In All Caps

http://animalstalkinginallcaps.tumblr.com/

Lolcats for hipsters, basically.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

TVTropes

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage

Wikipedia for the geeks like me that are obsessed with films and television – it’s also interesting to see so many correlations between shows and films, as well as the humorous recurrences in each respective programme.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The Wiki Game

http://thewikigame.com/

One of my new favourite games to play – it’s also a great exercise in resourceful web browsing. The aim – to navigate from one wiki page to the other by only using links within the articles. Best played with a friend so you can talk about where you’re currently up to, but you can play with users from all across the globe with this site.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Untiny.me

http://untiny.me/

Whilst shortened URLs are a boon to social networks like Twitter where character count is of utmost importance, they have led to a number of tricked website visits. Now you can see the actual endpoint of a shortened URL with this nifty little site – hopefully this will also have add-on functionality in the future.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Garfield Minus Garfield

http://garfieldminusgarfield.net/

Have you ever wanted to see the one of the most unintentionally depressing comic strips on the web. Then Garfield Minus Garfield is for you. Really raises the question of whether Garfield was a physical being in the comic universe, or just a figment of Jon’s mind.

This Is Why You’re Fat

http://thisiswhyyourefat.tumblr.com/page/5

There now exists such a thing called ‘Food Porn’ – essentially the most delicious and desirable foods ever imagined, gratuitously displayed in advertisements, libraries or blogs. It all starts out okay (well if we ignore that Cheese Melt on Page 1), but it’s past Page 5 that it becomes far more extreme. Just look at this ‘Meta Meat Cake’ on page 6, for example. Sadly the site is no longer running, but there’s enough on there to keep you simultaneously hungry and revolted at the same time.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Make Everything Ok

http://make-everything-ok.com/

Sometimes things can all get a bit too much. This website helps to make everything okay.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Attack of the Cute

http://attackofthecute.com/

Does everything still seem less than okay? It won’t after a few minutes spent here…

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Incredibox

http://www.incredibox.com/en/#/application

More just a wee experiment, but for the aspiring musicians, it’s a testament to clever flash-making and breaking down music to seamlessly fit together in any combination. There are many other sites and applications that offer this, such as Punk-o-matic, but few convey it in such a classy style.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Intel ‘Museum Of Me’

http://www.intel.com/museumofme/r/index.htm

Similar to the aforementioned ‘Take This Lollipop’ but a genuinely lovely experience. This site imagines what an art exhibit of your Facebook would look like and it’s handled surprisingly well with uplifting music, realistic displays and extra features such as videos, word walls and a galaxy of friends. Truly makes your Facebook feel like something special.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

FreeRice

http://freerice.com/

A fantastic idea whereby you answer questions and learn in order to donate rice – it costs nothing and is supported by advertisements displayed underneath the questions. Freerice is supported by the United Nations’s World Food Programme and has donated in excess of 100 billion grains of rice. Whilst each correct answer donates 10 grains, which might seem like a meagre amount, the combined forces of users and often their persistence to reach higher scores has led to this being a hugely successful campaign and triumph for the good that the internet can do.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

YouTube Doubler

http://youtubedoubler.com/

Ever feel like you’re wasting too much time watching YouTube videos? Now you can watch them side-by-side and only waste half the time. I don’t know why this was created but the very fact it exists pleases me immensely.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

ASCII Image Converter

http://www.glassgiant.com/ascii/

If you’ve ever frequented web forums or had particularly annoying friends on MySpace, it’s likely that you’ve been exposed to the wonders of ASCII art, often little more than a simple doodle of a car or similar. However, using this clever tool, you can put your whole face into ASCII – it can be a little difficult to find your face amongst the letters and numbers but it’s still a nifty little distraction.
