Search engine optimisation – to some it's the key to unlocking the potential of the internet, while to far more it's probably a closed book.

But a Spanish SEO company has just shed some light on this mysterious and changing art of helping people and companies make as much noise as possible on the leading web search engines.

It has found that 9.1 million web users seek information on SEO every month through Google, and 3.5 people every second type 'SEO' into a search engine.

The growing clamour from people in emerging countries to find out about SEO is illustrated by the fact that India returned the highest number of searches on SEO strategy, followed by Pakistan and the Philippines. Only then do the USA and Canada feature on the list.

And on a lighter note, if you've searched for SEO on a Thursday in March, then you're in good company – because those days and months are the most popular for people to be looking for guidance on the topic, according to Mashable.com.
