Zoopla acquires UK local web pioneer Upmystreet.com

A chapter in British web history ended today, as local information website Upmystreet.com was bought by Daily Mail-owned Zoopla.com for an undisclosed sum.

The original UK local listings site is recognised as one of the country's longest-standing web brands – but in recent years, its success has been eclipsed by better-resourced rivals such as Yell.com, and not least, Google's introduction of its Places search facility.

Visitors to the Upmystreet.com were today being redirected to Zoopla.

The amount Upmystreet.com has paid for the domain and its assets is unknown, but sources who spoke to Gigaom.com say that the price is likely to have been relatively small in e-commerce terms, and almost certainly less than £1million.

The development is the latest in Upmystreet's chequered history, which before this deal had seen it pass through the hands of four different owners.
